Task Testing

Part of AI document processing

Checking human review options for uncertain outputs

Human review is a process, not a checkbox in an AI product brochure.

Place a human gate after invoice extraction and before release. Named options include n8n's Wait node and its Human review step for AI Agent tools, Power Automate's Start and wait for an approval action, and UiPath Action Center's document validation actions. Test each against one blocked-record case: uncertain invoices must stay out of the ERP until a person decides.

Trace a blocked record

The n8n invoice flow runs from email through OCR and validation to approval and ERP. Follow an invoice with a missing supplier identifier, an inconsistent total or an ambiguous line item, and verify the flagged record cannot reach the ERP before a person decides.

In n8n, the Wait node pauses execution and can resume on a webhook call or when it receives a form submission, so a reviewer's form can release the record. For an AI Agent, a Human review step in the Tools Panel pauses the workflow until a reviewer approves or denies the tool call.

In the configured n8n workflow, open an uncertain item and check whether it pauses, shows the invoice and proposed value to a reviewer, and keeps ERP release blocked while approval is pending. Check that the workflow cannot continue to the ERP before approval.

Power Automate's Start and wait for an approval action waits for the approvers' response before the flow run completes. Its approval types include Approve/Reject - Everyone must approve and Approve/Reject - First to respond, so choose the type that matches who must decide on an uncertain invoice.

UiPath Action Center lets a workflow suspend and resume after human input, and its Document Understanding activities include Create Document Validation Action and Wait For Document Validation Action And Resume. In any of these options, try releasing a pending record and confirm it stays held until a person decides.

For a database-driven exception queue, open a flagged record and check for the original page, proposed value, field location and flag reason. Check whether a reviewer can correct the value, reject the document or request information, then confirm the record stays held until a decision.

Document Intelligence extracts invoice fields and line items as structured JSON, which can be integrated with accounts payable (AP) workflows for reviews and payments. Document Intelligence Studio is a development option, not a named AP review queue, so check that the connected workflow holds uncertain records.

Document Intelligence v4.0, dated 2024-11-30, is generally available. Development options include Document Intelligence Studio, the REST API, and the C#, Python, Java and JavaScript SDKs; check which connected AP workflow holds uncertain records.

Google Cloud lists Document AI Human in the Loop (HITL) as deprecated on 16 January 2024. The deprecation entry names no replacement route, so a Document AI pipeline needs one of the review options above, checked for the specific processor, version and plan.

Test governance as well as speed

Check who can view source documents in the live queue and inspect its retention setting. UiPath Action Center, for example, documents roles and permissions and access control. Document Intelligence describes extraction, not queue-access or retention controls, so verify those in the connected workflow.

Look for a correction record that identifies the reviewer and time. After export, check whether the reviewer or a downstream user can compare the corrected value with the original; keep the record held if that trail cannot be followed.

Require a second review for high-risk fields and cases where reviewers disagree. In Power Automate, the Everyone must approve type needs a response from each approver. Confirm the reviewer can correct a value, reject a document or request more information before the final system receives it.

Inspect the configured rule or confidence threshold that triggers review rather than assuming a universal cutoff. Judge it against business consequences: a threshold that sends nearly everything to review may be ineffective, while one that lets consequential errors through is unsafe.
